Is Descript worth it for faceless video?

Descript's free tier watermarks exports at 720p, and its cheapest paid tier buys speed rather than capability at 3.7x a faceless channel's monthly cost.

Disclosure: some links on this page earn us a commission if you subscribe, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we recommend — where a free or cheaper tool wins, we say so.

These two tools get compared as if they’re alternatives. They aren’t really. Resolve is an editor; Descriptdescript.com · affiliate is a way of editing by editing text. Understanding which problem you actually have decides whether the money is worth spending.

The free tier can’t publish

Start here, because it settles the “just use the free plan” instinct:

  • 60 minutes of media per month — and that counts what you import, discarded takes included
  • Watermarked exports, capped at 720p
  • 100 AI credits, one-time — not a monthly allowance like every paid tier
  • Commercial use is not explicitly permitted

Watermarked exports mean the free tier cannot produce a publishable video. It’s a trial, not a free plan in the sense that OBS or Resolve are free. That’s a legitimate business model, but plan around it rather than being surprised.

The credit line is the one worth pausing on, because it is not a low ceiling — it is a floor you hit once. Paid tiers refill monthly; the free plan’s 100 credits never come back, so the AI features that are the whole point of Descript are a single demo rather than a small ration. That reading is on its own page.

Note the commercial-use point too. It’s the same pattern as AI voice: the free tier of a creator tool frequently isn’t licensed for the thing you’re monetizing.

What the paid tiers cost

PlanBilled annuallyBilled monthlyMedia minutes/moAI creditsExport
Free$0$060 (1 hr)100, one-time720p, watermarked
Hobbyist$16/mo$24/mo600 (10 hrs)400/mo1080p, watermark-free
Creator$24/mo$35/mo1,800 (30 hrs)800/mo4K, watermark-free
Business$50/mo$65/mo2,400 (40 hrs)1,500/mo4K, up to 5 seats

The two-number question is settled. This page previously flagged that Descript’s pricing card shows two figures per tier without labelling either, and declined to say which was which. It has now been checked directly: the pricing page carries a Monthly / Annual toggle, it loads on Annual, and flipping it swaps every figure. So the lower number is the per-month rate when you pay twelve months up front, and the higher is month-to-month. Descript’s own line — “Save up to 35% with annual billing” — matches the arithmetic. The annual rate is quoted monthly but charged yearly: Hobbyist at $16 is $192 taken at once. Every price is also per person, and Creator’s “team of 3” and Business’s “team of 5” are seats billed separately, not included. Full breakdown on the pricing page.

Where Descript genuinely fits this format

Text-based editing suits narration-led video unusually well. Your video is a script read aloud, so editing the transcript and having the timeline follow removes a translation step that would otherwise cost real time. Cut a sentence, the video cuts. That maps onto the faceless workflow more neatly than it does onto most other kinds of video.

Transcription is a second genuine win, and not only for editing: you get captions, and a text source you can repurpose into the article and social posts.

So the pitch isn’t hollow. For this specific format, the tool is well matched.

But it’s a speed purchase, not a capability one

Nothing above is something DaVinci Resolve can’t produce. Resolve’s free version handles “virtually all 8-bit video formats at up to 60fps in resolutions as high as Ultra HD 3840 x 2160” — everything a faceless video needs, with no watermark and no export limit.

What you’re buying with Descript is time, not output. That’s a real thing to buy. It’s just a different question from “can I make the video,” and the answer to that one is already yes, for free.

The number that should decide it

Set it against the actual baseline. A faceless channel’s no-code starter setup is about $6/month — the cheapest voice subscription carrying a commercial licence, with capture and editing free. Narrate through an API and the voice line drops to cents, which makes Descript’s share of the budget larger still.

Now that the two prices are pinned down, the multiple can be stated exactly rather than gestured at. On the $6 baseline, adding Descript at Hobbyist takes the channel to $22/month billed annually — 3.7x — or $30/month billed monthly, which is 5x. At Creator it is $30 and $41, so 5x and nearly 7x.

That reframes the decision. It isn’t “is $16 a lot” — it’s “is editing speed worth several times everything else I spend on this channel combined.” Early on, when you’re publishing a handful of videos and your bottleneck is deciding what to make rather than assembling it, the answer is usually no. Later, when you’re producing weekly and editing hours are the constraint, it can flip quickly.

Also weigh it against the 10-hour cap on the cheapest paid tier. Ten hours of media per month is not ten hours of finished video — it’s everything you import, including takes you discard. In practice that cap is not what bites first: at a 3:1 shoot ratio it covers roughly 25 eight-minute videos a month. The limit that actually decides your tier is export resolution, and Hobbyist’s is 1080p.

What we’d do

Start on Resolve. It costs nothing and it can do the job. Revisit Descript at the point where you can name the hours it would save you, because then you can actually check the trade rather than guess at it.

We’ll update this with real numbers once we’re producing at volume — right now this is read from vendor documentation, not from our own invoices.

Caveat: pricing and plan limits change often. Every figure above was re-read from Descript’s own pricing page on 2026-09-10, with the billing toggle checked in both positions — the monthly/annual ambiguity this page used to flag is now resolved. Check the vendor before buying.
